It's time for more Character Approved coverage of New York Fashion Week!
Our own Character Approved honoree, Narciso Rodriguez put forth an elegant showing this season. Silhouettes were long, lean, and streamlined. Simple linens gave way to silks and subtle florals. Rather than big adornments, Rodriguez added detail with plunging necklines and sheer inserts.
Nanette Lepore's vintage sensibilities were on display this season as she launched her first line of swimwear. It was refreshing to see more modest cuts on a runway normally littered with wispy string bikinis and one-pieces with unfortunate cut-outs. Lepore's swimwear was far from matronly though, with suits that cover up what women frequently consider "problem areas" (hips and tummy) while still showing off a hearty dose of skin. It wasn't all swimwear, either; Lepore's spring 2011 line was a youthful collection of day and night looks.
Georgina Chapman's Marchesa line is known for statement formal wear, and those were the strongest pieces in her spring 2011 collection. The "Orientalist-inspired" line consisted of nearly 30 evening looks. My favorites were the gowns with sculpted edges that were at once avant-garde and extremely wearable. Frothy ruffles, delicate laser cutting, sculpted organza, and draped chiffons were the trademarks of this collection. There were even a few lace and sequin jumpsuits. Only Marchesa could make an evening jumpsuit that wouldn't look tacky outside the MTV Video Awards.
On Our Radar: Fashion Week concludes with shows from Ralph Lauren, Isaac Mizrahi, Calvin Klein, Rebecca Moses, and L.A.M.B.
