Food trucks are bringing exciting gourmet food options to city streets all over the country these days. Los Angeles is especially rich in these rolling restaurants; a friend recently counted 19 of them lining the streets outside the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Now the four-wheeled trucks are getting competition on two wheels. At Popcycle Treats, gourmet fresh fruit freezer pops are being sold from a customized bicycle.
Chef Michelle Sallah (pictured at right) has worked at the Spotted Pig in New York and Bar Marmount in LA. Now, she uses an innovative mix of seasonal fresh produce, herbs and other ingredients to create Popcycle Treats. Recent flavors have included orange blackberry and salty cucumber lime (above); lemon thyme fig, and non-fruity treats like creamy coffee cardamom.
Partner John Cassidy (also at right) is the legs of the operation. The treats can only be sold as far as he can pedal. John not only powers the distinctive orange Dutch cargo-style Popcycle Treats bicycle and cart--he built it.
Fans looking for their frozen treat fixes can find them on Twitter and Facebook, but only for a short while longer. These Character Approved popsicle partners plan to hang up their bike helmets for the season by the end of October.
