The Grio Tells a Modern Story of African-American Culture

If you are going to celebrate the achievements of any people, your task essentially comes down to storytelling. Now, as we celebrate Black History Month, it is again a moment to turn to stories--stories of African-American culture. In a crowded and noisy world though, these stories aren't always easy to find.

The Grio, which takes its name from the West African word for storyteller, is working to change that. As a breaking news and opinion site dedicated to African-American culture, the Grio is a leading online resource, from their efforts to highlight "100 History Makers In The Making" to their "GameChangers Media Project" focused on using film to change the negative stereotypes of black men so often seen in the media.

Founded by news producer and former reporter David A. Wilson, the site features a combination of original video and articles all designed to celebrate the achievements of the community while still maintaining a focus on current events and important stories of the day. All this month, the Grio is also partnering with popular location tracking site Foursquare to offer special offers and "badges" for people who check in at one of more than 100 historical locations relevant to African-American history throughout the month.

For helping to move our culture forward by creating a place to celebrate the stories and achievements of African Americans from the past and present, The Grio is Character Approved.
