They don't make music at the Onion's A.V. Club, but they're facilitating some of the coolest stuff you can get your hands on: exclusive covers by the best bands out there.
Originally, recording a cover version of a song was a way for bands to try to capitalize on the success of a single that they thought had potential. These days it's more of a way for bands to pay tribute to their influences, or just to do something fun. The A.V. Club Undercover series combines a bit of both of those attitudes. Touring bands stop in and pick a cover from a list of famous songs chosen by staffers and readers, then the A.V. Club posts a video of the performance. Not only is it a great way for bands to reach new audiences, it's a real treat for existing fans. After all, who wouldn't be drawn in by the Mountain Goats singing Jawbreaker's "Boxcar" or Of Montreal tackling "Fell In Love With a Girl" by the White Stripes?
Undercover is only in its second year, but it's a truly Character Approved series that I hope sticks around for a long time.
