The days may be getting shorter after the summer solstice, but we've still got months of sunlight ahead of us. Why not use it to dive into a great book? Here are five amazing stories to add to your reading lists: some fiction, some non-fiction, and all Character Approved. If you've got suggestions for books we may have missed, let us know in the comments section!
In the last twelve months, we've seen several excellent memoirs by women singer-songwriters, from Patti Smith's National Book Award-winning Just Kids to Roseanne Cash's Composed. Alina Simone joins their ranks with You Must Go and Win, a collection of quirky autobiographical essays about the years of work it takes to even approach becoming a breakout artist, with occasional side trips to explore her Ukrainian heritage.
The team behind Live from New York, the groundbreaking oral history of Saturday Night Live, talked with everybody they could find who's ever worked at America's first all-sports network for Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN. From star anchors to behind-the-scenes executives, they've all got something to get off their chests, and authors Andrew Miller and Tom Shales stay out of the way and let the stories flow.
In November 2007, hundreds of Russians filled the streets of Moscow to protest against Vladimir Putin, even though their government had made public demonstrations illegal. Valery Panyushkin, one of the nation's most outspoken journalists, spoke with a dozen of those protestors for 12 Who Don't Agree, including world chess champion Garry Kasparov, to draw out the personal accounts of what inspired them to take a stand... and how they fared against the inevitable crackdown.
In The Beginners, fifteen-year-old Ginger Pritt is falling under the seductive spell of a young married couple that's just moved into her small New England town. Rebecca Wolff, an award-winning poet, fills every page of her debut novel with an uneasy, creepy atmosphere that may remind some folks of the first time they read Donna Tartt's The Secret History.
Grant Morrison's brought Batman, Superman, and the X-Men into the 21st century—and his own extra-dimensional adventures have been pretty wild, too. His book Supergods: What Masked Vigilantes, Miraculous Mutants, and a Sun God from Smallville Can Teach Us About Being Human is a dizzying combination of memoir, magical thinking, and close readings of dozens of superhero classics, all with an eye towards uncovering the modern mythology that hints at our own heroic natures.
