Our top five summer art experiences are all outdoors. There are so many wonderful, Character Approved sculpture gardens and interactive art pieces that all of your summer weekends can be full of art!
With a newly opened section, there is nothing more relaxing than a summer walk on the High Line in NYC's Chelsea district. Begin with the larger than life KAWS sculpture that is sitting outside the Standard Hotel. You can post your own photo of the sculpture on their website! Continue through water sculptures, sky-high trees, and great city views. End on 30th street at Rainbow City with a Friends With You balloon park including our favorite, the jump-to-the-moon!
Enjoy a free ride across the river to Governors Island to see 12 metal sculptures from Mark di Suvero, on loan from the famous outdoor sculpture museum Storm King Art Center. The pieces, which incorporate metal waste from architecture projects, work well with the NYC skyline in the background.
Just across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is the Bay Area Discovery Museum. For this summer adventure, you won't see sculptures--you'll make them! Their Imagination Playground lets you decide what to build using giant foam blocks, fabric, slides, noodles and balls. After putting your architectural skills to the test you can enjoy an art project or a walk through Lookout Cover, complete with a shipwreck and oversized bird nests.
Boston is such a beautiful city in the summertime and taking an art walk through its diverse neighborhoods makes for a wonderful weekend. The Boston Public Art Walk highlights public artworks and gives you a dose of history at the same time. From traditional historical sculptures to tile mosaics to contemporary pieces, there is something for everyone. And with free audio tours and interactive maps, kids can use their technology while seeing a bit of the real world too.
Who better to see New York City with than the conceptual artists who are living and working here? Elastic City offers walks of all types through all neighborhoods. You can walk with Andrea Williams, an artist who uses site-specific elements in her work on a listening and whispering tour of Grand Central Terminal and create public art together. Or, you can get to know your shadow in a walk led by Chiara Bernasconi in the ever-changing Coney Island shadowscape.
