Tyler, the Creator's Talent Transcends Controversy and Hype

Written By Matt Jordan

Jun 7, 2011

Matt Jordan

Everything you need to know about Tyler, the Creator you can learn from the first two songs off of his album Goblin. The title track is mostly a conversation between Tyler and his therapist. It's obviously a scripted studio set-up, but--assuming they're being honest--it's an insight into an artist's mind that most interviews never get close to. And with all the controversy and hype surrounding Tyler and the larger group he helped found, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, this track does a great job of laying out his stance on everything from critical bloggers to his reputation amongst his friends. The next track, "Yonkers," gives you the rest of what you need to know about Tyler, the Creator: The dude can rap.

Yes, all the hype, worry and contempt for Tyler, the Creator and OFWGKTA would be for nothing if they weren't talented artists worthy of scrutiny. And though he's demonstrated it before, the Character Approved Goblin is Tyler showing the masses just how worthy he is of their attention. Sure he recorded the album as a 19-year-old, and there's a healthy dose of immaturity in some of his lyrics, but hip hop--and music in general--thrives on the energy of the youth. So yeah, you'll get some language that's not suitable for a car ride with grandma, but that's no way to pick your record collection anyway.
