Convertible furniture often arises from a need--a need for more furniture, more functionality, and more space. However, space is a commodity in big cities such as New York. Therefore, designers are constantly struggling to create multi-functional furniture that is both attractive and easy to operate.
Ashlee Conner and her husband had a space problem to solve. Looking for a new dining table, the couple struggled with what was available on the market. Almost ready to give up, they looked for the right person to build them something custom. When Ashlee met design contractor Matt Lee and engineer/project manager Bret Sorkness, she knew they'd be the ones to make her custom table. Once they finished the design, the threesome realized they had something special. The day before the ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) deadline expired, they formed a company and booked a booth.
Under the name Legato Studio, the three new business partners created a prototype to show, which I had the pleasure of seeing in person.
Their table is certainly unique. In its simplest form, it's a bench with optional storage underneath. The second position is an ergonomic workstation perfect for a laptop or iPad. The third is a dining table that resembles a picnic table with a bench on either side. Gliding from one position to the next, the table locks in place and offers the versatility needed by many city-dwelling families. It can even be used outdoors.
Ashlee was also concerned with the materials, so they used Plyboo--laminated bamboo plywood--and a water-based lacquer finish to ensure a green product. Its space-saving qualities eliminate the need to purchasing additional furniture and materials, making this Character Approved design well worth a second--or third--look.
