Deciding what to have for dinner at Medium Rare is easy: You're having steak. It's the only entrée on the menu at the popular new restaurant in Washington, DC's Cleveland Park neighborhood. More specifically, it's 10 ounces of prime, dry-aged sirloin cap steak served with hand cut frites, rustic artisan bread, and a mixed green salad. All for just $19.50. Yes, you can choose the steak's doneness, but the restaurant's name pretty much tells you what to do there too.
Where the choosing comes in is in selecting your beverages. General Manager and veteran sommelier Brian Zipin has put together a list of 11 wines by the bottle and nine by the glass, many exclusive to the restaurant. It's a well-chosen list that pairs beautifully with the food. And considering their quality, the wines are as modestly priced as the steaks.
There are a couple of extra choices you can make at Medium Rare--vegetarians can choose a grilled portobello with frites, and there are five desserts. And in case wine's not your beverage of choice, they also offer four beers.
In designing the restaurant, Zipin and his partners Mark Bucher and Michel Richard set out to create "a relaxed, fun, neighborhood environment"--with exposed brick walls, butcher paper on the tabletops, and sidewalk seating. With the Character Approved Medium Rare, they've done just that.
