Back to School: Nonprofits to Help You Do Some Good

The days are getting a bit shorter, the fall months are looming, and as we grasp onto the last moments of summer, visions of school are beginning to fill our dreams. But with all the hustle of our lives and getting kids ready for school, sports, and activities, it's easy to forget that there are many people in this country who could use our help. The pursuit of education for all is critical. That's why we've put together a Character Approved back to school roundup of activities, campaigns, and ways to give back for the coming school year.

- Loading up on supplies was always one of the most fun parts of getting ready to go back to school. But for some students, a shopping spree just isn't possible. That's why Staples and DoSomething.org have partnered on their fourth annual Staples for Students School Supply Drive--a campaign mobilizing young people to collect school supplies for the 13 million kids who return to school each year without the basics.

- School isn't just about supporting kids, it's about teachers too. DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that makes it easy for anyone to help classrooms in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America post classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org. You can browse project requests and give any amount to the one that inspires you. Once a project reaches its funding goal, they deliver the materials right to the classroom.

But more than just putting kids in front of screens, CampInteractive introduces the creative power of technology and the inspiration of the outdoors to underprivileged inner-city youth. It all starts with their Tech & Trek Center, an after-school tutoring program. From there, students venture out to the woods to photograph nature, learn leadership skills, and even study business in workshops lead by some of the Internet's most renown entrepreneurs.
