My Character Approved by Kimberly Cole

Written By Kimberly Cole

Aug 4, 2011

Kimberly Cole

A rising star on the pop/dance music scene, Kimberly Cole released her first ever DJ collaboration with international DJ/producer/remixer, Eddie Amador titled, "Arrow Through My Heart" on August 2, 2011.

Here are the some of the things in my life that I deem Character Approved.

1. The Cereal Aisle. My dad is a dentist, and when I was little I was forbidden to eat any candy or sugar in an attempt to evade the dreaded cavity! This of course included sugar cereals. Sitting at the breakfast table each morning, I was only provided with the healthiest options, including Grape Nuts (which to me resembled road gravel). There were no toys in sight! I clearly have developed a slight obsession, because today when I go grocery shopping you will find my cart filled with Fruit Loops, Trix, Lucky Charms, Golden Grahams, and any other sweet, colorful box I can find. I do have to hand it to my parents though, because I have yet to get a cavity!

kc-582px-Paris_-_Eiffelturm_und_Marsfeld2.jpg2. Paris. I must say that my Paris trip in 2007 is one of the most beautiful memories I have--it really does live up to the hype. I loved the art, people, architecture, and the crepes that made me come home two pounds heavier. I took photos in the streets during the day and wrote songs at night! I can't wait to go back.

3. Roller Skating. When I little, I was involved in everything from piano to tap dancing to gymnastics. But when my mom signed me up for roller skating lessons it became my everything. Most people don't even know the sport of artistic roller skating exists, but I must say, it taught me so much about myself--like how to really complete a goal and push myself harder than I ever thought possible. Now I am happy I have this skill that makes me unique. As a recording artist I'm not afraid to lace up my skates on stage... so be on the lookout!

4. Michael Jackson. No words can describe the impact Michael Jackson has had on my life and my work as an artist. I love me some old-school MJ! When I was little I would desperately try to master the moonwalk and dance in front of the mirror singing his songs. His passion and energy were indescribable.

5. Road Trips. Yes I'm afraid of flying, but that's not the only reason I love road trips. The feeling of freedom mixed with great music, deep conversation, and most importantly road trip snacks, make it one of my favorite things to do. As an artist I love being on the road with my whole team. I do still fly of course--I just make sure to have a cocktail first.

kc-480px-Manhattan_at_Dusk_by_slonecker.jpg6. New York. I love the term bi-coastal, mainly because of my affection for New York City. I did get to live there for a year in 2005, but I can't wait to really call myself a part-time New Yorker! I love the energy and vibe the city gives me. I'm in New York any chance I get and I am always secretly scoping out places to live.

7. Thai Massages. Don't get me wrong--I am as girly as it gets. I love being pampered! But those expensive spas have got nothing on the little ladies giving Thai massages in my favorite hole-in-the-wall spot in Studio City. The music they play is a bit questionable and you might not be lying next to a waterfall, but after being stretched, pulled and walked on, you will definitely leave stress-free and refreshed.

8. Movies in Bed. Cozy blankets, chick flicks and yummy snacks are just some of the reasons that movies in bed make me so happy. After being on the road, performing in clubs, and hours of sweaty rehearsals, decompressing with a good movie in bed is just what I need! Sometimes I would rather stay home and watch a movie with the people I love than go out! Some of my favorites are Coming To America, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pretty Woman, and yes--major guilty pleasure--Showgirls! Who doesn't love a little Nomi Malone?

9. The Recording Studio. I really feel blessed to be able to do what I love. Writing, recording, dancing to just-finished records--it all takes place in my studio. Designed and built by my producer Jeeve, it is hands down one of the most amazing studios out there. Not because of how big and expensive it is, but because of how much creativity and love comes out of it. I am still blown away when I walk into the studio with nothing and hours later come out with a hit song!

10. My Family. I would be nothing without the love and support of my family. They are my everything. They have given me such a solid foundation to be able to do what I am doing! Still to this day I love escaping from LA to my hometown of Huntington Beach for the weekend and getting a good dose of my family. When I start my own one day, I want to give them as much love as they have given me.
