Michael Kalish's 24M is a wonderful world of oversized pinwheels with the goal of raising awareness for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Often known as chronic bronchitis or emphysema, COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in America, affecting about 24 million people, many of whom are undiagnosed.
With 24M, Kalish created 24 pinwheels, which represent breathing, from 2,400 license plates. The number of license plates incorporated from each state reflects the percentage of the population affected by COPD in that state. Each pinwheel base is in the shape of the state and the entire monument comes together to form a contiguous map, resulting in a 30,000 square-foot piece.
Having already toured New York City, 24M will soon be in Dallas, Tampa, and Los Angeles. For bringing awareness to this important issue in such a beautiful, meaningful way, Michael Kalish is Character Approved.
