This fall, Orson Welles' Citizen Kane turns the ripe age of 70. The film tells the story of a young boy who rose from obscurity to become one of the most powerful media tycoons in America--yet, at the end of his life, has nothing to show for it but a house filled with material possessions.
In 1998, the American Film Institute released its top 100 movies of the last 100 years. Citizen Kane was voted to the top of the list. When the vote was revisited in 2007, it remained number one.
Despite its moderate reception on release, present-day audiences have clearly realized just how powerful Citizen Kane was and still is. To celebrate its 70th Anniversary, Warner Bros has released a special Blu-ray Ultimate Collector's Edition. The film comes packaged with the documentary American Experience: The Battle Over Citizen Kane, and RKO 281, the 1999 Golden Globe-winning movie based on the documentary.
Citizen Kane serves as a resonant parable for life even today. The film's timelessness makes it, and the new Blu-ray release, Character Approved.
