Anyone visiting Lower Manhattan these days knows that it is a hotbed of great design ideas. With the 9/11 Memorial now open and new buildings going up though, it's easy to overlook some of the other design intelligence that exists there. One such example is the Zipper Bench, designed by WXY Architecture and Design. The system is a computer-generated shape that grows, flattens, and twists to become a sittable sculpture.
The benches are Character Approved because all this shape-shifting encourages different kinds of social interactions, from sitting alone with a magazine to joining a big group for lunch. This system predates our other favorite metal architectural bench, and is also being installed in other locations around the globe.
