How Many Pieces of Furniture Can You Make from a Sheet of Wood?

Written By Jaime Derringer

I like the idea of making my own furniture, but sometimes I get frustrated when I have to assemble it myself. All those bolts and dowels and Allen wrenches can get to be too much. If there were a way to make furniture assembly more fun and enjoyable, I think we'd all say hallelujah.

By now you've likely owned a piece of flat-packed, assemble-it-yourself furniture. Designers have been experimenting with new designs that will minimize the tools used for assembly, and even the amount of materials used. Perhaps you've seen chairs made from a single sheet of wood? Swedish designer Pål Rodenius thought that wasn't enough. He wanted to take all of these new ideas and put them together in one product.

His Saw Assemble is a set of furniture all made using one sheet of wood. The pattern works for different kinds of furniture depending on which colored line you decide to cut, and it's all assembled without tools, glue or screws. From bookshelves to tables to seating, Rodenius has been able to make the manufacturing process a lot easier. One large sheet of wood for an almost endless amount of products? Now that's a smart--and Character Approved--use of materials.
