2011 marked a year of mass movements, collaboration, and the potential for investment in social causes. More and more, we're moving toward enabling people to be the change they wish to see in the world. Here are some Character Approved highlights from the year in Social Good / Giving.
Justin Bieber's Pencils of Promise Campaign: With his campaign with Pencils of Promise, Justin Bieber vowed to visit the school that raised the most money to build education in the developing world. [Image: Schools4All]
UN International Year of Youth: After touring the world, supporting youth-run initiatives, and promoting awareness of the world's most pressing issues and youth advocacy, UN Youth Champion Monique Coleman wrapped up the UN International Year of Youth by meeting with the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon himself. MENA for Citizen Media: In part credited to the digital connectedness of young people, there's been a rise in work and enthusiasm for initiatives to empower local advocacy this year. One example is Ashoka's Middle East and North Africa (MENA) for Citizen Media: A Global Innovation Competition. Over 30 entries were received from Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, and elsewhere--more than any other competition of its kind. [Image: Ashoka]
Occupy. Inside. Out.: Occupy Wall Street has become one of the most talked-about movements in the developed world, drawing attention to issues of social inequality in America and elsewhere around the globe. Occupy. Inside. Out. offers an example of a group documenting everyday stories of people behind the movement. Built on the TED Prize-winning Inside Out platform, the project aims to give everyday people a voice and means of expression. [Image: Occupy. Inside. Out.]
Women for Women: Women continued to be at the focal point of driving social change this year, with organizations like Women for Women and its founder Zainab Salbi leading the way through sustainable practices and advocacy. [Image: Women for Women]
Collaborative Consumption: Sharing means caring, and collaborative consumption put that idea into practice this year, inspiring people everywhere to share resources, goods, and skills, from hotel rooms to education. [Image: Collaborative Consumption]
Warby Parker: Warby Parker is a company founded on the principle of seeing differently. For each pair of glasses you buy, the company donates to vision spring, which distributes glasses to those who need them. In a big move this year, the company raised 12 million dollars, marking a significant milestone for those that think it’s good business to do good. [Image: Warby Parker]
Japan Society: The world showed its support for Japan this year after a devastating earthquake. Through efforts of groups like Japan Society, millions have been raised, and many are at work on the front lines of relief and recovery. [Image: Japan Society]
Water for People: Founded by Ned Breslin, Water for People provides sustainable solutions to one of the world's biggest issues: water supply. [Image: Water for People]
Fonderie47: John Zapolski and Ethos Water Founder Peter Thum take AK47s out of Africa and turn them into beautiful products, the proceeds from which go toward funding more disarmament work. Now that's taking a vicious cycle and transforming it into a virtuous one. [Image: Fonderie47]
