Wow! 2011 was quite a year of twists and turns, and fashion had its fair share. From a massive masstige shopping tidal wave to the return of everyone's favorite Muppet, let's take a look at what was Character Approved in the world of fashion in 2011:
Elizabeth Taylor: Long considered one of fashion and beauty's biggest icons, we lost Elizabeth Taylor this year. She represented what it means to be a real woman of substance and style, from her glamorous movie star image to her generous nature. Her legend continues on as items from her estate--including her legendary jewelry--are being auctioned off at world-renowned Christie's in New York this month, with part of the proceeds going to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Haider Ackermann: Even though this designer's hard-earned status could hardly be called an "overnight success," designer Haider Ackermann captured international attention with his fall 2011 collection and has continued to gain status as a major designer. [Image: Style.com]
H&M Presents The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Collection: The next big collection from the important mass retailer? An affordable, fashion-forward line inspired by the big screen adaptation of Stieg Larsson's smash hit book. [Image: Andreas Sjödin, H&M]
The Olsen Twins Nominated for a CFDA Award: From TV tykes to bonafide fashion superstars, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen solidified their place in the fashion industry with a CFDA nomination for The Row and by launching designer handbags for the line, including a $33,000 backpack that actually sold out despite a difficult economy. The Rise of Fashion Bloggers: From major brand campaigns to television commercials, the power of the fashion blogger cannot be denied. Major moments this year include Leandra Medine of ManRepeller walking the runway at New York Fashion Week, Saucy Glossie's Lindsay Calla in a TV commercial for TJ Maxx, the Lucky Magazine FABB Blogger conference, and Tavi Gevinson's talks with media powerhouse Jane Pratt for collaboration opportunities. The Return of Tom Ford: The beloved fashion designer was everywhere in 2011, with the launch of a boutique on New York's Madison Avenue, another gorgeous collection, and the launch of Tom Ford Beauty. [Image: Tom Ford Beauty]
The Missoni for Target Collection: The partnership between the retail giant and the Italian design house was such a success that it resulted in a crash of the Target website and lines around the block at retail locations. [Image: Target]
The Return of Miss Piggy: Everyone's favorite Muppet made her official comeback in 2011 when The Muppets made a major splash at the box office. From a full spread in InStyle to her own MAC cosmetics collection, everyone is clamoring to dress the legendary ham, from Jason Wu to Zac Posen. [Image: InStyle]
Burberry's Christopher Bailey: The designer has taken the luxury British label into a successful future, with expansion into social media, the successful launch of Burberry beauty, and new fragrances like as Burberry Body. [Image: FashionIndie]
An "Imitation" Wedding at New York Fashion Week: While many fashion shows close with a bridal look, Imitation of Christ's Tara Subkoff went one further by actually staging a "wedding" at her Spring/Summer '12 presentation, with the "bride" being none other than model/heiress/socialite Lydia Hearst-Shaw.
