When Wit premiered in New York back in 1998, it ran off-Broadway for more than 500 performances, earning honors such as the Pulitzer Prize, the Drama Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Award, Drama League, and multiple Lucille Lortel Awards.
Now, the show is making its long overdue Broadway premiere and has found its star in Cynthia Nixon. The play follows a poetry professor (Nixon) as she undergoes experimental treatments for cancer and becomes the studied instead of the studier.
The Manhattan Theatre Club and director Lynne Meadow needed to find an actress up to the task of playing this complicated and layered character, and they could do no better than Nixon. She is Character Approved for bringing dignity and respect--along with a shaved head--to her role on the stage.
The play is currently in previews and opens on January 26, 2012 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. We will be there!
