When you first hear about War Horse you might think it's a film about a horse trained for war.
That is not the case.
War Horse, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, is less about war and more about the relationship between humans and animals. Director Steven Spielberg draws a sharp line between humans who treat animals unfairly and those who treat them with care and respect. The film begins with the introduction of a farm boy named Albert (Jeremy Irvine) and his horse Joey. Although Joey isn't suited for farm work, the horse makes an intelligent effort to help his owner--partly because Albert leads with his heart instead of the whip.
Throughout the film we meet several more kind-spirited characters like Albert. There is a sickly girl who finds joy and a renewed love of life in animals. There is a soldier who is pained by seeing horses misused for the sole purpose of lugging canons across a battlefield. These people are contrasted with individuals who see the horses as nothing more than tools. The story calls attention to the abuses of animals, while reminding us of their intelligence.
For its portrayal of positive individuals with humane intentions, and for reminding us to be kind to the animals in our lives, War Horse is Character Approved.
